If you have to constantly tolerate your Maltese’s barking and have no idea how to stop it, this article is for you. Maltese terriers, like many other dogs, will bark for a variety of reasons. Some dogs bark more than others, but in general, all dog owners have to put up with this problem eventually. Here are five common reasons why Maltese terriers bark.
They want attention
Maltese terriers are sociable dogs. If left unattended for a period of time, they quickly become lonely. In order to grab their owner’s attention, they start barking. If your dog is feeling lonely, you should put aside some time and play with it for a while. If you aren’t occupied, it’s a good idea to take your Maltese for a walk. This not only satisfies its need for attention, but also lets it have some much needed exercise.
They are hungry
If you’ve forgotten to feed your dog, it’s no surprise that it’ll start barking. Dogs know when it’s meal time and if their bowl is empty, they’ll try to attract their owner’s attention to get them to put some chow in it.
Someone’s at the door
It’s in every dog’s instincts to want to protect their territory. If your Maltese scents someone unfamiliar approaching your home, it might bark to alert the owner of the house and to ward the stranger away. They might even bark when they sense someone familiar approaching the house as they get excited to see their owner come home.
When they need to go, they need to go
Maltese terriers might also bark if they can’t do their business at their potty area for some reason. This may be due to it being too dirty or cluttered, or you simply might have forgotten to lay new sheets of newspaper after cleaning up!
Something is amiss
If your Maltese seems to be barking in desperation, something might be wrong. There might be a fire that has just broken out somewhere in the house, or an intruder might have found their way in. Whatever the reason, it’s best you investigate.
